A feline FIV/FeLV rapid test kit is a point-of-care diagnostic device used to screen cats for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) antibodies and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) antigen from a single blood sample.

This 20-pack combo cassette delivers results in 5–10 minutes using serum, plasma, or whole blood, making it a practical screening tool for catteries, shelters, breeders, and pet owners who want to monitor feline health between veterinary visits.

This test is a lateral flow immunochromatographic assay the same core technology used in many rapid diagnostic tests designed specifically to detect two markers in one cassette:

  • FIV antibodies (Ab): indicate exposure to Feline Immunodeficiency Virus
  • FeLV antigen (Ag): indicate active Feline Leukemia Virus infection

Because both results appear on a single device, users get a combined immunodeficiency and leukemia screening result without needing two separate tests.

Key Benefits

  • Dual detection in one cassette screens for FIV and FeLV simultaneously, saving time and sample volume
  • Fast turnaround results readable in as little as 5 minutes, no later than 10
  • Flexible sample types fits serum, plasma, or whole blood
  • At-home or in-clinic use no laboratory equipment required
  • Cost-effective screening 20 tests per box lowers the per-test cost for multi-cat households, shelters, and breeding programs
  • Long shelf life kits are stable for at least 12 months from the date of manufacture when stored correctly

Features

  • Individually foil-pouched test cassettes to protect reagents until use
  • Disposable capillary droppers for accurate 10 µL sample dosing
  • Pre-measured assay buffer tubes for consistent dilution
  • Sterile swabs and a centrifugal tube included for sample collection and processing
  • Clearly marked “S” (sample) and dual “C/T” (control/test) result windows for FIV and FeLV
  • Printed instruction manual included with every kit

How to Use the FIV/FeLV Test Kit

  • Collect the sample.

Draw whole blood from the cat and either centrifuge it to obtain serum, or collect it into a tube containing anticoagulant to obtain plasma.

  • Prepare the device.

Remove the test cassette from its foil pouch immediately before testing and place it on a flat, horizontal surface.

  • Apply the sample.

Using the capillary dropper, place 10 µL of the prepared specimen into the sample well marked “S.”

  • Add the buffer.

Immediately add 2–3 drops (approximately 80–90 µL) of assay buffer to the same sample well.

  • Read the result.

Interpret the test between 5 and 10 minutes. Results read after 10 minutes should be considered invalid.

Tip: Allow the test device, buffer, and sample to reach room temperature (15–25°C) before running the assay for the most reliable results.

How to Read the Results

ResultWhat You’ll See
Positive (+)Both the “C” control line and the “T” test line appear, regardless of how faint the T line is
Negative (–)Only the “C” control line appears; no T line is visible
InvalidNo line appears in the C zone, regardless of whether a T line is present — the test must be repeated with a new device

Who This Test Kit Is For

  • Cat owners who want routine screening between vet checkups
  • Shelters and rescues intaking cats of unknown health status
  • Breeders and catteries screening cats before introducing them to a colony
  • Veterinary clinics needing a fast, affordable pre-screening tool
  • Foster caregivers verifying health status before placement

Precautions

  • Use reagents only after they reach room temperature.
  • Do not remove a test cassette from its pouch until you’re ready to run the assay.
  • Do not use any component past its printed expiration date.
  • Do not mix components from different lot numbers; each kit is quality-control tested as a matched batch.
  • Handle all specimens as potentially infectious material, following local regulations for biological waste.

Limitations

This kit is intended for in vitro veterinary diagnostic use only. Results should always be interpreted alongside other clinical findings by a licensed veterinarian. A confirmatory laboratory method, such as Western Blot, is recommended following any positive result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the FIV/FeLV rapid test kit detect?

It detects FIV antibodies, which indicate past exposure to Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, and FeLV antigen, which indicates active Feline Leukemia Virus infection both from a single test cassette.

What sample types can I use with this test?

The kit works with serum, plasma, or whole blood, giving flexibility depending on the equipment and time available for sample preparation.

How long does it take to get results?

Results are typically readable within 5 to 10 minutes. Any reading taken after 10 minutes should be treated as invalid.

Can I use this test kit at home?

Yes. The kit is designed for use without laboratory equipment, though sample collection (such as drawing blood) should be performed by someone trained to do so safely, such as a veterinarian or vet technician.

What do positive and negative results look like?

A positive result shows both the C (control) line and a T (test) line, even if the T line is faint. A negative result shows only the C line. If no line appears in the C zone at all, the test is invalid and must be repeated.

Do I need to confirm a positive result with another test?

Yes. A positive result should be confirmed with an additional diagnostic method, such as Western Blot, and interpreted by a veterinarian alongside the cat’s clinical history.

How should the test kit be stored?

Store the kit at 2–30°C, away from direct sunlight, and never freeze it. Kept this way, it remains stable for at least 12 months.

How many tests come in one box?

This kit includes 20 individually pouched test cassettes, along with matching droppers, buffer tubes, swabs, a centrifugal tube, and an instruction manual.

Is this test suitable for kittens?

The kit can be used on cats of any age, but maternal antibodies in kittens under six months old can affect FIV antibody results, so veterinary guidance is recommended for interpreting results in young kittens.

Why did I get an invalid result?

An invalid result occurs when no line appears in the control (C) zone, which can happen if the sample or buffer volume was incorrect, the device expired, or it wasn’t read within the 5–10 minute window. Repeat the test with a new cassette following the instructions exactly.
